Create more commands from the Linux core library

Check all the commands currently available and working. After that, research on the important Linux commands which are not still implemented here.

Checklist -

• Check the existing commands from the codebase
• Decide up atleast 2 commands ( 1 for level 1 and 2 or more for lvl 2 ) which you want to work on.
• Research about it , learn how it works in Linux and what are the corresponding utilities available in Windows
• Implement it.
• If it is working as it should, create the PR with the detail working of it
• Dont't forget to write tests for it

P.S - If multiple people want to work, you can. Just write what you will create and how you will execute in a sub issue.

Hi @0xsambit,

I’d like to work on this issue:

First, I reviewed the existing commands in the codebase.

Then, I identified two essential and commonly used Linux commands that are missing:

• whoami – I’ll use GetUserNameW (Win32 API) to get the current user.
• hostname – I’ll use GetComputerNameW to retrieve the machine hostname.

I’ll implement both by:

• Creating safe Rust abstractions using the windows crate or FFI.

• Handling errors gracefully.

• Writing CLI wrappers for usability.

• Adding meaningful unit + integration tests.

@shiva177 If you use uname , it shows the machine name. Next, if you try typing whoami in the command palette , it will work as I have integrated Powershell in Winix, so that simple linux commands which are supported by it, can work easily without rewriting them from scratch again.

So, I would suggest you research and come up with 2 commands which are not at all supported by powershell or Windows in overall, but is important in linux. Then find out the alternative in Windows for that, and then try to create it.

For example - try replicating sudo command, exactly how it works in Linux

Hey @0xsambit, I found sudo and disown as key Linux commands not supported in Windows. I’ll mimic sudo via ShellExecute with runas, and disown using CreateProcessW with DETACHED_PROCESS.
Let me know if I should proceed.

Hi @0xsambit , as this is a multi contributor issue, I'd like to suggest a couple more commands, kill and nice, both of these are non trivial. My approaches would be

1. For kill, windows doesn't have signal management like UNIX, a method can be signal emulation and using OpenProcess and TerminateProcess to kill a process from it's pid

2. For nice, using OpenProcess and SetPriority

I do have a few more in mind like grep (windows' find isn't as flexible and feature rich)
