documentclass times option not work, still use Latin Modern

Why not use newtx instead of times?

This is a definite bug. AASTeX has always used "/\usepackage{times}" which is obsolete and apparently does nothing now. To get a "times" like font for text and math, you need to use "/\usepackage{newtxtext,newtxmath}" instead. Until this is fixed, one can either just add the these new packages to your latex manuscript or change line 238 in aastex701.cls from "/\usepackage{times}" to "/\usepackage{newtxtext,newtxmath}".

Good, I am using \usepackage{newtx} now which can import newtxtext and newtxmath together

Also, if you still use times, you should add fontenc:

But, this option does not work:

Also, if I change line 238 of aastex.cls to \usepackage{newtx}

and re-compile the tex file

it still does not use times font

aastex.cls is a pretty old version of the classfile. The latest version that was called aastex.cls was developed in 2005. I don't know why it wouldn't work for that version. It should work if the newtx package is called within the manuscript.

Yes, if I put \usepackage{newtx} in .tex it will use times

but if I put it in .cls it will not
