Linux/macOS pre-built packages #1

Putting this here for myself. I barely have any idea what a reasonable way to distribute Linux packages is. Building the project itself is not problematic, but I don't know what would make sense as a release file. Should I prepare stuff like .deb or .rpm packages? Or should I just release the built tarball? On which distros is that going to work, what about libraries? I have a lot of research to do.
