Confirm On‑Prem IP Discovery Integration Capability of IPAM

We have deployed an open‑source Azure IPAM solution in our Landing Zone [Azure] environment, and we are now exploring options to integrate the on‑prem IPAM with the Azure IPAM.
We would like to confirm whether the deployed open‑source IPAM solution supports extending IP discovery to on‑prem environments.

Please confirm the following:

1. Does the open‑source IPAM solution support on‑prem IP address discovery?
2. If yes, please share:

• Supported integration methods (API, agents, discovery plugins, hybrid connectivity, etc.)
• Network prerequisites (VPN/ExpressRoute, firewall rules, service ports)
• Required components or add‑ons for on‑prem discovery
• Any recommended architecture or deployment pattern for hybrid IPAM use

3. Any known limitations or considerations when using the IPAM solution across hybrid (Azure + On‑Prem) environments.

Hi @Sowmya010488, thanks so much for reaching out! I hope you don't mind, but I converted this to a discussion as it appears to be more around information gathering rather than something actionable that needs to be addressed at this point in time.

Does the open-source IPAM solution support on-prem IP address discovery?

Does it have support for non-Azure networks, subnet and endpoints? Yes.

Does it have a mechanism for Discovery? No.

There are a LOT of challenges with attempting to discover networks and it's a bit beyond the scope of this platform at this time to try and overcome all of those. There are many solutions that sit in the on-prem space today (such as Infoblox, BlueCat, Solarwinds, etc.) and perhaps a better strategy is to integrate with those (either directly or indirectly through pipelines) since many customers integrating Azure tend to have these in place already (albeit not everyone for sure).

I do want to continue this discussion further to see how I can be of service to you on this, but before we start down that path can you share with me how you track on-prem IPs today? Do you have a platform in place you're looking to replace, or are you coming from something more rigid like an Excel Spreadsheet, Google Doc, or something similar?

1. Current State:
We are currently using IP Address Management (IPAM) as a built-in feature of Windows Server (2012 and later) in our on‑premises environment. As part of our client’s DC footprint reduction and broader migration to Azure, we are actively looking to minimize and eventually remove on‑prem dependencies wherever possible.

2. Azure-side Implementation:
We have already deployed this open-source solution in our Azure landing zone, and it is working well for discovering and managing Azure IP addresses. Given this, we wanted to explore whether the same solution can be extended to include on‑prem IP addresses as well.

Specifically, we are looking to understand whether there is any feasibility to:

• Add or merge on‑prem IP data into the existing solution
• Do so either manually, via import/export, or through some form of automated discovery
• Treat this as a one-time onboarding activity, after which IP management would be centralized within this tool

3. Extension of Existing Solution:
If there is an option to extend the existing deployment to support on‑prem IPs, could you please share:

• Whether this is supported
• The recommended approach, steps, or process to enable it

Note: Due to cost constraints, we are not looking to introduce any additional tools or commercial solutions for this requirement.
