Desertification is a larger problem than first really meets the eye ... because the absence of photosynthesis not only means that there are gigantic missed opportunities for carbon sequestration but there are also gigantic missed opportunities for people to occupy and re-green land that is otherwise uninhabitable.
We must find ways to re-populate deserts with small landholders in order to not only re-green wastelands but also to give people space and communities [where they can exchange produce and other things that they make] to LIVE.
We must sequester carbon as LIFE ... and creative smallholders are a big part of what it will take to accelerate the re-greening of land that is not converting enough carbon into valuable life.
Without forests or grasslands or growing plants to convert the heat of solar radiation and atmospheric CO2 into biomass ... vast swathes of land are not just completely uninhabitable, they are also becomibg unnaturally unvisitable.
It's time to RE-green ... and that means a much lower priority should be placed on what WAS native in the past 25,000 years ... instead we must think about what can be sustainably native for the next 25,000 years ... the two are not exactly mutually exclusive but ...
... our species no longer has the luxury of being so incredibly ignorant of its 20,000,000,000 footprints ... and if we are to have any chance of surviving more than a hundred years or so; we are probably going to have to form a Type II, III, IV or V Kardashev civilization ... that means not just traveling into space or to exoplanets, but terraforming and figuring out how to go beyond just extracting minerals or using energy, but using/forming/tailoring life to suit human purposes.
