Motivations

Building a chess-platform is an interesting problem to learn about running distributed systems at scale
where you are essentially building a game-server and a real-time gaming leaderboard to handle the following the following:

1. LIVE connections to manage each individual game
2. Keeping both players clocks in sync
3. Record all moves and populate in a DB with event-streaming layer
4. Viewers being able to spectate LIVE games (Pub/Sub)
5. Create tournaments with open and swiss formats
6. Maintaining LIVE leaderboard with DiceDB ?
7. Add support for team-tournaments where 3-5 player teams and they compete against one another with a time-bound format to accumulate as many points as they can without a time-gap between matches.

Authoritative game servers are interesting. And for a turn-based game like chess this is probably a pretty solid approach. But how do we keep both players clocks in sync ? Some sort of websocket connection streaming the time to both players ?

The above article kinda explains what kind of client-server to implement. The problem comes on how well you manage the byte stream,
and thats where the biggest problems lie. Do look into netcode as well. Its often used in multiplayer game development.
