png image getting squished horizontally

Note 1: somewhat related to #1, since if I change the aspect ratio from 1 to .9, the image seems to resemble the original png better.

Note 2: perhaps the issue has something to do with the latest commits in Jan 2023 since this didn't happen when I was working on a prototype in early December 2022, which looked like this:
