Feature request: make it clearer to the user when they've gone over the character limit

When adding a new instrument, I've run across this error:

From playing around with it, I think it's an issue with character count. It looks like the character limit for the source is 50 characters (49 works and 53 doesn't, so 50 feels like a good guess). If it's over 50, I get that error when trying to publish. It'd be good to tell the user why there's been an error when they go over the character count, so that they can fix it easily! If we're being even fancier, there could be an alert that appears as soon as the user has gone over the character count, sort of like the one that appears if the HBS number has only one digit or is a letter.

I also ran into the same issue.

If the input exceeds the allowed limit, the system only shows a generic “invalid” error when publishing. It does not indicate:

• the character limit,
• the current character count, or
• which field is invalid.

In my case, I initially thought the issue was caused by the Instrument Source field because I had entered a URL. However, after changing it to “Kaoura” (the company that invented the instrument), I still got the same error message. Since I also had multiple Name/Alias entries at the same time, it was difficult to tell which field was actually causing the problem.

I also have a related question: does the order of entries determine which one is treated as the main name and which one as an alias? For example, in the screenshots, I entered “en” in both the 1st and 3rd rows, and I was not sure how the system would interpret that.
