Migrate Debian packaging from makedeb to Pacstall #171

Description

Role

I am a user on MX Linux 25.1 (Debian 13) using the portable version because the current .deb installation method is broken.

Suggestion

I suggest switching the official Debian/Ubuntu packaging tool from makedeb to Pacstall.

Benefit

The current makedeb servers (proget.makedeb.org) are frequently returning 530 errors and the project is now unmaintained. This makes it impossible for new users to install the .deb version of Freesm. Switching to Pacstall (the recommended successor to makedeb) would provide a stable, "installed" version of the launcher. This fixes the Wayland permission issues (like the "Open Folder" and "Import ZIP" buttons) that are currently broken in the portable build.

This suggestion is unique

  • I have searched the issue tracker and did not find an issue describing my suggestion, especially not one that has been rejected.

You may use the editor below to elaborate further.

As of late 2025, the creator of makedeb has officially stepped back from the project. On modern Debian 13/MX 25.1 systems, Pacstall handles the new library transitions (like t64) much more reliably. Moving to Pacstall would ensure Freesm remains the most accessible and "feature-rich" fork for Debian-based users without them having to troubleshoot dead server links.
