when trying to get my cookie at all, i get this error: json.decoder.JSONDecodeError: Expecting value: line 1 column 1 (char 0). plus when manually changing the cookie value in the code, it cant get the csrf token.

It appears the login endpoints now require JavaScript to be enabled. For example, if we try to call https://rec.net/api/auth/csrf without JavaScript enabled, it returns 403 with the following line included:

<div class="main-content"><noscript><div class="h2"><span id="challenge-error-text">Enable JavaScript and cookies to continue</span></div></noscript></div>

The endpoints run JavaScript code that then load the actual data, which Python can't do. This has nothing to do with any Cloudflare captchas.

I did find this library that claims to have full JavaScript support: https://github.com/psf/requests-html. It could fix the issue but requires further investigation.
