I have a touchscreen monitor with a microPC x86-64 with Debian 13 installed and a webcam plugged in.
I have autologin enabled. Screen lock turned off. Standby turned off. I would like the monitor to turn on/wake up when someone walks past the monitor aka motion.
I have tried a plethora of trial and error to get a Debian 13 build to wake on webcam motion. I have used cinnamon and gnome installations. I have installed motion and xdotools.
I have modified created and configure Motion
• Copy config: mkdir ~/.motion && cd ~/.motion && cp /etc/motion/motion.conf ..
• Edit motion.conf: Open ~/.motion/motion.conf for editing.
I have deamon on
Set all ports to 0
I have tried variations of:
o KDE: on_motion_detected 'qdbus org.freedesktop.ScreenSaver /ScreenSaver org.freedesktop.ScreenSaver.SetActive false'.
o Gnome: on_motion_detected 'qdbus org.gnome.ScreenSaver /ScreenSaver org.gnome.ScreenSaver.SetActive false'.
o On_motion_detected ‘qdbus org.cinnamon.ScreenSaver /org/cinnamon/ScreenSaver org.cinnamon.ScreenSaver.SetActive False’
o on_motion_detected value xdotool mousemove_relative 1 1; xdotool mousemove_relative -- -1 -1
and several others
I have tried on_motion_detected and on_event_start versions above.
I have run motion -c ~/.motion/motion.conf and restarted motion after every motion.conf change.
I have created basic python scripts that run on startup.
Nothing has worked.
my webcame does show two devices when runnig v4lw-ctl --list-devices. dev/video0 and dev/video1. I have tried both on motion.conf setup.
I have also ensure the only process using said devices is motion, and it is. Using lsof -| grep /dev/video0 does show multiple outputs but all outputs have the same motion PID.
My webcam light is on so it shows active. If I restart Motion the light turns off and then back on after a second or two.
It has been a long time since I have used Linux so I'm a little rusty on that front.
Any help and direction is appreciated.
