Argh. Things don't stand still. Many things HDF does we don't need, but complex numbers are a hot topic.
Changes to the HDF5 library come in V2.0 which already follows some conventions and support in netcdf4 and netcdf4-python. To what extent the latter is a pyfive issue needs exploration.
