More stable PyGame alternative #82

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
There is no imminent problem, yet. But the dependency of pygame might prove problematic in the future given the recent drama on the team as seen below:

I think sooner rather than later we should figure out a new backend for the simulator that doesn't have such an uncertain future.
Describe the solution you'd like
I think we should look into some of the other alternatives/standins that exist, such as one of the following
- pygame-ce
- pysdl
- something else?
