TThere seems to be an overal issue with this one because well, tthgere is no chance for a variant of sort to release an item when taking damage, unless a secondary mod gives you an ability that does this somehow

I killed a Beetle and got white item from it. It drops.

Is from this mod. The entire code is inherited, so you may not have realize it.

It appeared to me. And I just installed the variants mod 5 minutes ago. Though is after killed.

Is already in the code system. The changes of drop is probably there if really want to find it.
The drop rate is by chances though.

The previous comments definitely meant just taking damage, not killing. Nebby knows items drop from variants, they're the one that implemented that, that part's not inherited.
If you can get a variant to spit out an item just by taking damage, not dying, post a log and r2 profile code.
