Proposal: Add signal generator (e.g. 116us period, 58us half-period) pulse on one of the PWM pins using timer comparators. This wouldn't add any extra processing as no interrupt would be necessary, but would allow some of the functionality (bit length calculations) to be demonstrated by just bridging the pulse pin to the input pin.
