Audio issues with Arch/Pipewire/KDE plasma #73

I'm trying to use qsstv on my system which is as follows:

  • Arch Linux
  • KDE Plasma (Wayland)
  • Pipewire audio
  • Icom 7100 (connected via USB)

I am able to make this work ONLY by using pulseaudio and setting the default input and output device to the ICOM USB sound device. However this is extremely inconvenient if I want to use ANY other normal audio devices at the same time. Which, actually I do.

I have tried ALSA settings and choosing the sound device (it's called CODEC_1 on my system). However if I do this I get the error "Unable to open usbstream:CARD=CODEC_1 -- USB Audio CODEC No such file or directory".

I have also tried pulseaudio and choosing this device. But, so far as I can tell pulseaudio ignores the choice of device and uses the default set for the system.

Now in the audio configuration it seems like I can choose an output device for qsstv once running. However the option doesn't exist for recording device.

As such, so far I've not found a way to have qsstv work with my system without stopping other applications using the real default sound devices (my microphone, and bluetooth headphones).

Has anyone else seen this problem and worked around it?

For reference I am also using wsjt-x, audacity with no issues. Fldigi used to work, but I think a recent update stopped it working. MMSSTV via wine used to work, again a recent update seems to have stopped that with a non sound related issue. However the qsstv issue predates that, it always was this way even when fldigi/mmsstv worked. So I don't believe it's a systemwide sound issue.
