Table of contents on cover sheet

Some stakeholders would like the table of contents to be included on the cover sheet, as in previous versions of gptables

An optional parameter for where to place the table of contents when producing or writing a GPWorkbook

Although this is permitted within the spreadsheet guidance, it is not recommended for the following reasons. This feature will therefore not be added to gptables.

The cover sheet usually has a lot of text on it. The best way to present this in to treat column A like it is a document. Make it a reasonable reading width and wrap the text within it. This makes it easier to read.

When you have a table of contents on a cover sheet this makes the first column of this table really wide which looks odd. So what often happens is people do not wrap the text in column A, they let it run really far across the sheet. This is not great for accessibility or general usability as it means you have to horizontally scroll to read the text.

So it is better, in general to have a cover sheet of text and a sheet with a properly marked up table of contents.

This seems to have since been updated.

This can live within the cover sheet or on its own worksheet, but make sure it is marked up properly as a table and named ‘Table of contents’ (more information on marking up and naming tables can be found in the Tables section). If it is on its own worksheet make sure this is named ‘Table of contents’.

As such it may be worth revisiting this request.

• Tables of contents can be either on its own, or on the cover sheet.
• The table of contents should be formatted in line with the Analysis Function Guidance, including being named 'Table of contents'.
