So yeah, apparently this is infected with Malware X-gen. According to Avast at least.

Avast is a shitty antivirus that can't get its facts straight. OpenKH has no malicious code.
But it can give false-positives due to stuff like Panacea hooking and/or accessing the game's memory.

I got Avast from work and it indeed complains about it when trying to download the zip file. Let's see if I can report this.

its going to be the same issue all open source projects may face if you dont pay antivirus companies money and you use certain methods they deem unsafe theyll mark it as a virus. as with any open source youre free to go through the code and see where it has malware and decide for yourself. For OpenKh im sure if you did find any malware we'd be happy to deal with it and i think ban whoever added it from contributing in the future.
All that being said hundreds or thousands or people use openkh daily mainly mod manager for playing randomizers if there really was an issue we'd be getting reports from the people not antivirus companies that you can pay to mark you as not a virus. (im sure they do actually check in some manner and wouldnt allow a malware program to be on the ignore list or whatever you want to call it)

For reference the owner of archipelago pays for a signature key to prevent its releases from being flagged but they do so with a key they dont just have for AP i believe and recently they started actually publishing their release candidates via github aka unsigned and someone came in with a similar this was marked as a virus im just warning people. so easily for them thousands of daily users no real bug reports other than someone who uses an antivirus (which in this day and age at least on windows windows defender will protect 99.9% of PC users just fine.) i uninstalled avast years ago and still with my not normal PC user experience have not received any actual viruses.

it all boils down to you can browse the code and decide for yourself, trust the fact a program has many users with no virus reports, or stay beholden to your antivirus and not use any program it suggests has a vrius

Annoyingly, Avast is a pain to prevent you from downloading. I did shove the link into Virus Total and all green, but Avast isn't available. We could push every build automatically to Virus Total so that AV makers can pick up on our builds faster. Signing our binaries would definitely help. I did upload the build to Virus Total just as a sanity check because supply chain attacks exist.
