asking for github password when trying to push

After going the the configuration for github (Module 3) I'm being asked for my github username and password when I try to commit. When i enter them, I get usual github message (in the jupyter notebook) that github deprecated pword login back in 2021 (I use 2FA for both my personal and organizational github logins). I get the same message when I try to git push using the terminal window.

I can to pull any changes made directly to the repo on github (e.g., edits to the README).

Any suggestions? Thanks.

If Git is asking for a password, you likely cloned the repository using the HTTPS link, not the SSH link.
I step 3 of module 3, be sure to click on the SSH tab.

You can fix this, though.

If you change directories into your repository in the terminal and type:
git remote -v
It should show something like: origin https://...

That's the indication that you used the HTTPS link, not the SSH link.

Now, you can use:
git remote set-url [paste in the link from the SSH tab]

It was definitely set up with SSH (I'd already checked with git remote -v) but I did finally figure it out and it was one of two things or maybe both:

1. when I was trouble shooting I reran the Step 1 code block to generate the SSH key on 02_git_configuration_HiPerGator. Because I already had an SSH key, it gave me this message

"Your account already has an ed---- key at /home/embruna/.ssh/id_ed-----.
Do you want to use this key? [up/down for history]

The problem is that I entered "yes" instead of "Y" - there's no cue for response format - so it kept telling me I'd have to move the key to the right place.

The second issue was when I ran the code block in Step 3 and it asked for my "name", I entered my actual name (First Last). It wasn't until I looked at the raw code inside the block later that I saw os.system(f"git config --global user.name '{name}'") and realized the request was for the github username. That's why it was asking for login.

I'd suggest modifying the error message as for step 1 to:

Do you want to use this key? Y or N [up/down for history]

and the request for name to

# Ask user for their name and email
name = input("Please enter your github username:")
email = input("Please enter your email:")

The good news - looks like it is working fine now, thx.
