It seems like a good idea to build Affix components that have logging capabilities. I recommend having an optional argument upon initialization that specifies the file to write log information to. If blank, do not log.

I've added a basic LoggingAffix in 4a2c40a. It also serves as the "example" Affix in my current Affix Authors' Tutorial. I think you can put LoggingAffixes around the component you want to monitor to implement what you are proposing, e.g.
(LoggingAffix,calls-into)(ToBeMonitoredAffix)(LoggingAffix,calls-out-of)

The parameter to LoggingAffix are labels that are added to log information output by each instance.

Writing a more full-fledged DebugAffix that also catches and reports excpetions should be a nice newcomer task!

It should probably wrap the LoggingAffix's methods to reuse the logging functionality that already exists:
