can't open new group

i am not able to create a new group using any of these methods:

1. right-click on a tab does not provide TGM menu
2. clicking the green TGM plus sign does nothing
3. right-click in the group bar does open the TGM group menu, but selecting "new focused group" does nothing

new thinkpad Carbon X1 g8
new Linux installation Ubuntu 20.04
new Basilisk 2020.09.11 64 bit
TGM is the only extra I've added

Any ideas?

The main difference between that and my system is "Linux". I don't have a linux system so there's a lot of guesswork here. Do you get anything in the browser error console?
