Using defaults if now 'extra.treeware' available?

I notice that if you install the treeware/plant package without the extra.treeware config then when you install the package that includes treeware/plant the console message is not shown.

I love the composer config extra.treeware --json {} shortcut but I wondered if there was a way to fallback to the defaults if the extra.treeware does not exist?
