Revert "Merge pull request #1399 from Unity-Technologies/origin/multithreaded-liveness"

This reverts commit 3f183f3, reversing
changes made to ab0dd26.

These changes caused some integration test failures in the Unity repo.
The changes will be improved and committed again later.
