High memory consumption of Bazaar background service

Originally discussed here, but I believe that it deserves a separate ticket.

Bazaar background processes seem to be regularly consuming a lot of memory - hundreds of MB. See this comment from @itsHanibee for more details.

The gnome-software background service here on my system has only 150MB and it actually handles much more (flatpaks and regular rpm packages, system updates, firmware updates etc.). Maybe the memory consumption of Bazaar could be improved?

We really should have the option to NOT have the background service. I don't install apps often enough to have this running in the background.

I have a background ProtonVPN app which is consuming about 14MB btw.

dw, i opened an issue about it. #1188 there you go. there's some good news for you atleast. apparently it was smth they were thinking but never got around to actually doing.

Again, Bazaar is not just for installing new apps. You seem to misunderstand the complexity.

All modern GUI software stores have their own background services - for good reason.

Anyway sounds likd the owner is thinking they'll put this option in #1188 (comment)

Those use cases around search seem to be about installing new apps tho? Why would I want Bazaar results in my krunner search when I have a workflow where I open the tool in the rare situation that I want to do an install

I use Bazaar because it is packaged with Universal Blue Autora. I use Universal Blue Aurora because it uses KDE as the base. I use KDE because it is highly configurable

Also, I care about memory because I run lots of containers as I'm doing lots of development on my machine. So even with ample memory I can sometimes experience memory pressure

Of course I can force it to quit which I'm doing now or even whip up some sort of systemd monitor to kill it

I don't care if it runs in the background or not, but on my system with 32GB of ram, it's been OOM killed several times if I forget to kill the background process after using the software.

@DivineGod this! Just had my system run out of memory. It lagged for a minute, didn't oomkill anything and recovered with ~100mb of free ram. Killed bazaar manually and ~45G was freed. The original post talks about a few hunderd megs, so this seems like a separate issue.

Which version of Bazaar do you have installed ?

At this point this looks more like a memory leak or just bad memory management to me
1.5GB for a background service? Something is NOT right

Can you please tell us the version of Bazaar you're using? There might have been improvements regarding your issue in recent versions (notably 0.7.11), so knowing your version will help us determine if this is still a current issue or something that's already been addressed.
