Recognizing that these are the OOTB configurable options for basemaps in an SMK app, is there a place the docs convey to users that additions are possible and if so, where/how such additions can be made?

Adding new base maps, is technically possible, but only by monkey-patching the SMK code at runtime. If this is a desired feature, it could certainly be added as a supported API.
