Stepper motor stays energized when not moving.  The torque in the gear train makes this unnecessary and releasing the motor after a move will decrease current usage.  Additionally, there may be a need to  "shut down" the stepper motor driver (L293D) and the enable pins on that chip should be user accessible (they aren't as of now).
