unable to use .env file

I'm attempting to use dotenv with an .env file at the root directory of this project with no success. I've tried to specify the path as well as including dotenv/config in the package.json 'dev' section.

@scraggelz If you already installed the dotenv package via npm, then you only need to add require("dotenv").config(); next to the import section in webpack.config.js. No need to do anything else.

As an alternative to environment variables @rglover propose using settings-env files, which can be ignored in git as well.
