Referencing Examples

I would like to reference an Example in a paper, but the URLs are not stable enough for this. (For example, which recently split ode into ode-linear and ode-nonlinear.)

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how we could improve this? Presumably it's something we would like people to do?

I agree, this is a problem (and indeed in the Guide and the Examples I made no attempt to all to fix references to Examples). @tobydriscoll, do you have a view?

Maybe this is too ambitious. But I think it might be possible to have the examples published in a similar way as the Guide. It could be something like 'the (unfinished) PDE coffee table book' which we can continuous editing and publish at certain time spots. I guess this way we can cite them more easily and attract more (outside) contributors in the meanwhile.

They're not refereed and may be fluid. Even quoting title and author in a citation seems overstated to me.

To me stable URLs are not much of a concern; internet search is here to stay, I believe. But the best is to reference www.chebfun.org.

It's a little awkward, but couldn't we assign each example it's own unique number and ensure that, say, http://www.chebfun.org/permalink/example1234.html always pointed to roots/RandomPolys/?

I guess I share the view of @tobydriscoll that this would be over-egging the pudding. These are flexible, time-dependent, unrefereed publications.

It would be appropriate to include the author(s) of an example in your
acknowledgements section. That strikes me as more fitting than a literature
citation.
