Yes, it's possible to make AetherVR work on Linux (I've even gotten Half-Life: Alyx to run), but currently there are only builds available for Windows, so you would have to compile it yourself. Are you trying to run a native Linux app or a Windows app via Wine/Proton?

Now that there are Linux builds included in the release, you could just use these without compiling for yourself. You would just have to set the environment variables VR_OVERRIDE, XR_RUNTIME_JSON, and PRESSURE_VESSEL_FILESYSTEMS_RW in the launch options for the Steam app to point to your OpenComposite and AetherVR installations.

However, I don't think it's worth the effort because only games that use the Vulkan API work on Linux at the moment, while most Proton games use Direct3D 11. Maybe I'll try to fix this sometime in the future.
