Failed pip install for mmif-python

Bug Description

When I run "pip install mmif-python I get an error.

Reproduction steps

This is on Python 3.12 on Mac OS 14 (Sonoma) on a clean virtual environment:

$ pip install mmif-python

Doing a pip install --upgrade pip did not help.

PS: I am aware that we support an older version of Python, but thought I will register this anyway.

A quick lookup for a quick solution led me to guess that we probably need a radical re-write of setup.py (and migrate to pyproject.toml instead of setup.py install).

From my side, under a new conda env with 3.12, pip install mmif-python just works strangely.

Anyway, this would probably be a non-trivial fix, and until then conda or <3.12 is recommended.
