I have been looking for something like his for awhile, so thank you for spending the time on it!

One issue - when running this on a machine that already has nix installed it removed the entire nix cache. Is there a way to detect if nix is already installed and preserve the nix cache?

Try commenting out

- name: Remove Installed nix files
  file:
    state: absent
    path: /nix
  become: true

and see what happens. The installer may complain. If it works raise an issue and we can add an option to keep or blow away /nix. If not it's the installer from upstream that could use a feature request.

Is it strictly necessary to remove /nix when the version of nix changes? Having a boolean variable to skip this would be nice 🙂

A PR would be fantastic. Thank you. If we do this we should have a test similar to this one:
https://github.com/danielrolls/nix-install/blob/master/.github/workflows/test-with-newer-ansible-versions.yml
just to demonstrate that running with this property set doesn't break nix. That way I can keep bumping the default version safely when new versions of Nix are released.

Hi all. The latest release on Ansible Galaxy finally has an option to keep /nix directory such that the cache isn't blown away. If this is still useful for you, give it a try and let me know how you get on.

It's remove_nix_directory. You can for example set pass -e remove_nix_directory=false when calling ansible-playbook and /nix will be preserved. It's in https://github.com/danielrolls/nix-install/blob/master/README.md now. Hopefully it's clear.
