Add parameter checks

Hi David,

I wanted to check your preference regarding how you’d like to approach parameter validation.

There are a few options:

• Implement validation logic directly within each function
• Create a small set of internal utility/helper functions to standardize validation across the package
• Leverage an existing package that already provides validation helpers
• Create a small dev/support package for the sassy-r ecosystem that provides shared validation utilities across packages

Each approach has its own trade-offs in terms of consistency, dependencies, and keeping the codebase lightweight.

Either first or second option is OK. Don't want to create a dependency on another package just to do parameter checks. Also don't want to add more packages to the ecosystem for this. These checks are easy to write and have no maintenance. No need to do any more work than necessary.
