Doesn't work with base64 URL's, is there an easy change?

If I pass a base64 URL String the same way I would with an img src, it doesn't seem to work. With guidance I'll be happy to implement and push if I end up using the component, is this easy to do?

I need this too. Would also like to see it accept SafeResourceUrls as well.
