linux blender 2.77b8 quits, GLX error, unable to obtain x11 visual from context

After clicking the start button blender quits with the error below.

Using i7 Lenovo T440p, intel hardware, fedora 24, kernel 4.5.0-302.fc24.x86_64

Tried with gnome-shell and icewm.

I tried mirrored screens, separate screens (single X).

All 4 options give the same outcome.
