The idea of sub-columns would allow work to be more granularly defined. For example, you may have a main column called "In Progress" with sub-columns representing "Active", "Testing", "Review". In this way, if the main "In Progress" column were to be moved, the whole group of sub-columns would move with it. More to the point, from an analysis perspective, it would be possible to see how many cards are "In Progress" overall, with the added ability to see how many exist in the individual sub-column categories.
