Backwards compatibility: define compatibility promise for grant changes

Goal
- Avoid accidental breaking changes for existing integrations.

Scope
- Document what “backwards compatible” means here (API surface, config shape, events)
- Identify any likely breaking changes and mitigation (feature flags, deprecation cycle, adapters)

Acceptance criteria
- Short compatibility note in repo (or issue summary)
- Follow-on issues for any planned breaking changes
