AppCenter causes the entire desktop to crash.

What Happened?

I opened the App Center, installed the Minder app (I didn't have to enter a password, which was strange), then switched to the next app, and suddenly the App Center window disappeared, and I got the message ">>App Center<< not responding."

I clicked "Wait," and after a while, the message reappeared, but the App Center window still wasn't visible.

I tried this a few times, but nothing changed.

Then I clicked "Force Quit," and everything went "whoosh," and after a moment, I was back at the login screen.

After logging back in, all applications were closed, and Chrome reported a crash.

Steps to Reproduce

I have described what I did, in what order, and what happened next in the "what happened" window.

Expected Behavior

I expected to be able to install more applications without the entire desktop crashing.

Just installed the OS today on a Dell via USB and I am having the same issue after running the latest software updates, repeatedly. Hopefully this helps and you can fix it.

I managed to capture a backtrace and logs of the crash.

Symptoms:

1. Clicked to install an app (it finished successfully).
2. Immediately clicked to install a second app.
3. After the first one finished, AppCenter crashed with an "Aborted" signal.

Technical details:

The crash is a double free or corruption (fasttop) triggered in the get_packages thread.
Logs:

I wanted to comment I also have the error when installing packages but I have not had the system hang overall but the AppCenter will just close the window but still have the background process running. It does this any time anything is trying to install specifically. Up to date 8.1 new install made 2 days ago.

I had kind of the same issue. I installed an app and meanwhile i clicked back to see other apps and it got frozen and then closed.

Apart from that, I know it's not the thread, but I would like to suggest to sort/organise apps by date, name, most downloaded, best valoration... because having a huge list is not very useful to see trends or good apps.

Adding to this, a similar issue with AppCenter crashing and how to reproduce the issue.

1. Every time I open the AppCenter, it will check for updates.
2. While the AppCenter is checking for updates (message at the bottom right), browsing any of the categories like audio, communication, etc will cause the AppCenter to freeze and crash.

I have to wait for the "Checking for updates" to finish before I can start doing anything, otherwise the AppCenter crashes.

Another crashing issue while browsing and installing apps from the AppCenter, and how to reproduce it.

1. Open AppCenter and browse the lists of apps in any categories to the bottom instead of using the search function
2. Install any apps from the list (while the AppCenter window is Maximized or Unmaximized)

The app center crashes every time when the app is installing. I had to restart my PC for the Firefox shortcut to show up in the apps list.

Similar thing happens to me. I simply browse and install apps. AppCenter crashes. Here are the logs:
