Hello Jason:

Here is a description of the event we hosted last year:

Environmental Justice in Upstate NY.

We also collaborated with our friends at Indiana University to record a video to kick off the panel.

This panel was also built into a course being taught in spring semester, Environmental Studies 232: Environmental Justice.

Finally, the planning + outcome of this event will be a keynote at the spring 2018 ENY/ACRL Conference here at Colgate.

Idea for a workshop via @cbgoodman: an introduction to Excel. The workshop might be an hour or hour-and-a-half and include:

• how pivot tables work
• how do basic charts
• introduction to formulas
• what is a spreadsheet / database

Responding to @hepplerj & @cbgoodman:
We took a similar approach to our EDW sessions at UMD (with Adam Kriesberg & David Durden) insomuch as we felt good data stewardship values & practices start at home. We did a 30-minute intro to data management and coupled that with overviews of data initiatives (EDW, EDGI, PEGI, Data Refuge, Climate Mirror) and tool tutorials (Open Refine, Data Accessioner, Fixity).

In 2018, ICPSR did several things for EDW:

• Shared a webinar on DataLumos as a tool for archiving government data
• Had a Facebook Live conversation with our acquisitions manager (in front of boxes and boxes of documents), telling a story about a recent endangered dataset she helped save
• Hosted a "Save the Data" event, inviting people to come to ICPSR's office to sit down and add a government dataset of interest to DataLumos. This event borrowed ideas from hackathons and telethons by bringing people physically together and energizing them for the work (music, food, swag, and celebrations when each dataset was released), using a virtual thermometer on the even site to document the number of datasets released, and using Facebook Live to update users joining the event virtually.
