There seems to be no information on how to tell how to connect to etcd somewhere. It just seemingly tells me how to bind this to an IP and its port, which in docker is effectively not important. Am I missing something obvious to the developer but not to a newcomer like myself?

I don't understand what you mean. Did you fail to connect to the ETCD server after startup?
