Root Cause

The error Invalid content for node listItem: <> is a ProseMirror schema validation error. In ProseMirror/Tiptap's schema, a listItem node must contain at least one block-level child (typically starting with a paragraph). The <> in the error message means the listItem has empty content — zero children — which violates the schema.

Stack Trace Breakdown

The stack trace shows:

1. checkContent → ProseMirror's internal schema validation (@tiptap/pm/model)
2. Called during commitHookEffectListMount → a React useEffect running on component mount
3. The bundle file is undo-delete-D7wCGZIq.js — this is a Vite chunk name, not necessarily the undo-delete feature. Vite bundles multiple modules into chunks with arbitrary names.

The Rust path was already fixed in PR #3663 (commit 9e548bf9c) to ensure listItem and taskItem always start with a paragraph via ensure_starts_with_paragraph().

However, the TypeScript md2json() path (packages/tiptap/src/shared/utils.ts:46-63) delegates entirely to @tiptap/markdown's MarkdownManager.parse() and does no post-processing to ensure listItem children are non-empty. The only post-processing is sanitizeMarks() which only handles the code mark exclusion issue.

Where md2json is Called (Potential Trigger Points)

• enhance-success.ts:18 — When an AI-enhanced note completes, the LLM's markdown output is converted via md2json(text) and stored. If the LLM produces a list with an empty item (e.g. - \n- Item), this creates invalid JSON.
• note.ts:34 (session persister) — When loading notes from markdown files on disk via processMdFile().
• importer.ts:64 — When importing external content.
• edit-summary.ts:172 — When the chat tool edits summaries.

These JSON strings are then fed to the editor via parseJsonContent() → NoteEditor component's initialContent prop → Tiptap's useEditor({ content }) or editor.commands.setContent().

Why This Triggers on Mount

Looking at packages/tiptap/src/editor/index.tsx:194-214, the editor is initialized with:

content: shared.isValidTiptapContent(initialContent) ? initialContent : shared.EMPTY_TIPTAP_DOC

The isValidTiptapContent() check (utils.ts:20-27) only verifies type === "doc" && Array.isArray(content) — it does not validate the schema of nested nodes. So a doc with an empty listItem passes this check but fails when ProseMirror actually tries to construct the node tree.

Previous Fix

PR #3663 (9e548bf9c) added ensure_starts_with_paragraph() in the Rust from_md.rs to handle this exact issue. The same fix was not applied to the TypeScript md2json() path.

Suggested Approaches

1. Post-process md2json() output — Add a recursive sanitization step in md2json() (similar to sanitizeMarks()) that ensures every listItem and taskItem node has at least one child, inserting { type: "paragraph" } if empty.

2. Use validateJsonContent() as a guard — The schema validation module (schema-validation.ts) already exists but is only used in tests. It could be used in parseJsonContent() to catch and repair invalid content before it reaches the editor.

3. Strengthen isValidTiptapContent() — Currently it only checks type === "doc" + Array.isArray(content). It could perform deeper schema validation or at minimum check for known problematic patterns.

Option 1 is the most targeted fix and mirrors what was already done on the Rust side.
