@samhh thanks for opening this - and sorry for the slowness in getting to this issue, vacation weekend got in the way😅 I actually haven't tested fish at all yet, so I'm really grateful that you're testing it.

I've just pushed a bunch of fish related fixes to the init script - let me know if that works? Re: OpenRouter, I use it via OpenRouter currently, so it should work - but I have OPENROUTER_API_KEY set globally in my zshrc which is probably not the way most people would use it😅

For OpenRouter, specifically, it tries looking for the API key through 3 different paths:

1. api_key in config - checks the [openrouter] section of ~/.nsh/config.toml for an api_key field
2. api_key_cmd in config - if set, runs the shell command (e.g. pass show openrouter) and uses stdout
3. OPENROUTER_API_KEY env var - falls back to the environment variable

If none of those produce a non-empty string, it bails with: "No API key for openrouter (tried config, api_key_cmd,
$OPENROUTER_API_KEY)".

Models in OpenRouter should be valid - google/gemini-3-flash-preview, google/gemini-3.1-flash-lite-preview, anthropic/claude-sonnet-4.6 are all valid and current. Please let me know what you find, we can handle it in this issue if convenient or open new ones!

This might be something about how I'm building nsh, but I see different output for init fsh between nsh and nsh-core where the former is stale. If I go ahead with nsh-core then it seems to freeze my shell on startup until I ^C.

If I keep going I see:

$ nsh_query hello # ? converted automatically
Error: No API key for openrouter (tried config, api_key_cmd, $OPENROUTER_API_KEY)

My testing config is:
