I want to be able to easily author content in Markdown. markdown the new lingua franca of rich text formats and is nearly ubiquitous.

Figure out which markdown extension is the best supported.

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:WikiMarkdown seems the best
Additional context
We already support 'embedding' markdown by using the External Content extension - which is the right tool for avoiding duplication of content.
