The program you provided for an example is a generic program without any season or episode numbers. If there were s/e numbers, there would be an additional element < episode-num system="xmltv_ns" >2020.21.0/1< /episode-num >. I used to include an episode-num system "onscreen" and would populate with S2021E22, but that is not really defined, is free flow, and redundant to the explicitly defined xmltv_ns system.

Is there a consuming program that does not read the xmltv_ns system for s/e numbers?

I'm not saying I won't add the onscreen back, but for your example there is simply no s/e numbers to work with.

yes, the "onscreen" one. for example, emby does not consume "xmltv_ns", so any recordings just get the date with no season info rather than a preferred "S2021E193" or the like.

Emby (and Jellyfin) does consume the xmltv_ns without issue, but if the program is generic and/or does not have any season or episode numbers, then the xmltv will not have the "xmltv_ns" episode-num systems.

For "SH008966450000", here is what is provided by SD/Gracenote.

With no season number or episode number, there will be no "xmltv_ns" or "onscreen" if added.

that's the problem with the program being "generic"... evening talk shows, for example, won't produce a S2021E193 so a repeat recording can happen since it doesn't use the gracenote episode/show number to determine if it's a re-air.

There's nothing for me to do if there are no season or episode numbers in the data. For late night talk shows, those will typically change from a generic show to a specific episode, and then will have the xmlt_ns populated, a couple/few days before airing.

If you are trying to record the generic news shows, you will have to set up the series recording to record all episodes and uncheck the "Don't record episodes that are already in my library". Emby will only show the first episode as scheduled to record, but will schedule the next one after a guide refresh. I'm not sure yet if the guide refresh is actually necessary, but I'm testing that out now. I think this is something that emby could probably improve on.

Just a clarification, because there are a couple ways to interpret your last message. I am not not using the gracenote episode/show number because it is generic, the generic programs don't have s/e numbers because there is no gracenote episode/show numbers to use.
