  It may be a good idea to modernize the current class file. In starting a new major release one could get rid of things like the BibTeX support, some class options and make use of more recent kernel versions. As more and more people use Overleaf which comes with very recent versions of TeX Live there is no need for too much backwards compatibility IMHO.
