Your project is very interesting. I would like to know if you have planned to add the following functionality:

Possibility to connect 2 buttons and 1 screen (via i2c) to have a remote control for manual use (requires 4 wires).

The ability to program a backslash via the indi driver (just add on indi base focuser)

The ability to connect to an existing network with wemos via a web page.

The ability to communicate via usb.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm planning to work on the project more this winter (I live in Toronto, Canada). One of the things I thought about this summer was how to get the project to a state where other people can use it. My thoughts were:

• I think I need to create an interface that will let you set your Wifi SSID and Password. Right now you just program it into the firmware. My thought was to have the ESP8266 create a default hotspot with a web page and let you setup your configuration information there. You can see the start in the wifi_html directory (configuration.html).
• I need to get more feedback on what other people need in a focuser, or get other people to try it out. Right now I'm using a C11 and a hyperstar, which is a niche setup. I really appreciate your comments.
• I'm the only person I know (locally) that uses Linux to run a telescope. i.e., an ascom driver would be good.

In one of my board designs I thought about using the analog input on the ESP8266 to get button input. I backed off the idea because it didn't fit into my physical build. I didn't push on it because I had the idea that I could use a wireless game controller (i.e., the INDI joystick interface) to get the same effect.

Would you be able to talk about use cases where you think this would be valuable? All of my 'in the field' experience is with a telescope setup that's "camera only", and almost completely automated.

I agree. I thought that this could be part of the configuration on the actual focuser. i.e., when you're setting up an SSID and Password you can also add settings like backlash. It seems like a setting that's bound to your physical setup and unlikely to change often.

Like a configuration page (i.e., what I mentioned above), or a web page that would let you operate the focuser directly? Both seem like good ideas.

The ability to communicate via usb.

I agree that this would expand the potential audience, and it's doable. It's a matter of prioritisation.
