<h3><span>About us</span></h3>

<p> The Altar Servers Association known as <i>Mass servers</i> refers to their selves with the name 'Our Lady of Fatima Altar Servers Association. The group claim their treasured history started with April 15, 1962 event of the dedication of the Parish. Throughout the 60s up to the 70s mostly older men and some student entrants, who are mostly boarders, were altar boys. Nonetheless, things changed in the mid-70s on wards when the first set of Catechism children joined in 1975 from their first Holy Communion class at the initiative of Fr. James Shevlin, SMA.</p>
<p>By way of definition, an altar server is a lay assistant to a member of the clergy during a Christian religious service. An altar server attends to supporting tasks at the altar such as fetching and carrying, ringing the altar bell and so on. A young male altar server is commonly called altar boy. The term "acolyte" is sometimes applied to altar servers, but in the proper sense means someone who has been received into the ministry of that name, usually reserved for those who are to be promoted to the permanent or transitory diaconate. These must receive the Ministry of acolyte, which historically was classified as a minor order, at least six months before being ordained as deacons. The following aspects of the ministry are to be looked at these include: gender, tonsure, age, event, activities, publications, and vocations.</p>
<p><b>Gender:</b> formerly, only men and boys could serve at the altar outside of female religious houses, but canon 230 of the Code of Canon Law promulgated in 1983 allowed local ordinaries to permit girls and women to do so. Now, women serve Mass on Mother’s Day in the Parish. This has been the case since 2014. Mrs. Cecilia Dung recalls assisting Fr. Shevlin in Masses outside the Parish.</p>
<p><b>Tonsure:</b> in the early church, before someone could be a server he had to be tonsured. However, it is not the case nowadays. Vestments: albs or any other appropriate attire, such as a cassock and surplice, may be worn by servers in the Latin Rite. </p>
<p><b>Age:</b> the minimum age varies by local circumstances, but boys must be matured enough to carry out their duties without disrupting the sanctity of the altar. In the Parish mostly confirmed boys or those undergoing the sacrament are accepted to join the Association. </p>
<p><b>Event:</b> there is usually a light get together in December termed Mass Servers Day.</p>
<p><b>Activities:</b> Aside the devotional outlook of the group which is the lay ministry of the bread and cup1, they are concerned with the religious education of the members and also carryout certain extracurricular activities.</p>
<p><b>Publications</b> <br />
With the wherewithal to produce things, the Association once produced a Parish bulletin in the late 80s. They were stopped by Mgr. Udeh because of typographical and grammatical errors. The seized the opportunity to do so because the Priest who sponsored the production of the bulletin were transferred. They were in charge of the sales of the Parish Sunday bulletin in the 90s. They also took over from the Legion to publish a newsletter known as <i><q>the Mass Servers Voice</q></i> from March 2004 - April/May 2007. Evidently, they have learnt that one does not learn how to use the left hand as an adult. As such, one laudable achievement of the group so far was the publication of the <i>Torch Magazine</i> in 2012 and 2014. They also published the book titled: <strong>Grace: <em>the History of Fatima.</em><strong></p>
<p><b>Vocations</b> <br />
More so, the Mass servers<q>'</q> group hope to see willing members encouraged to join the priestly vocation like the likes of Fr Emmanuel Oramma, OSA, Fr Anthony Anichukwu, Fr Hilary Basil, OSA, Fr Alexander Dung, and Fr Anthony Oparaji, who were one time Mass servers. Rev Fr Peter Uchu was appointed the Fatima Deanery Chaplain for Altar Servers.</p>

<h3><span>Our Activities</span></h3>

<p>
<p><b> The morning activities:</b> they meet on Saturdays in the morning after morning Mass by six (6) a.m. as it is today. As may still be observed on a typical Saturday, the boys clean the candlesticks and the bigger candle stands (altar candle) by clearing the candle wax on it. This is especially done by the newcomers. Those assigned to serve baptism and/or marriage dress up for the ceremony when it is time.</p>
<p><b>The evening activities:</b> they members return in the afternoon by 4 p.m. for altar practice and allocation of Mass also called sharing Mass. Classes: a form of religious education is carried out in the group. At the practice, the boys are taught Latin responses and how to pronounce the words of sacred items. It is organized this way, the main/intermediate boys are taught how to set the altar and about the sacristy.</p>
