Wireless %quality field includes unwanted leading space in format output

Hello,

I’m using i3status and noticed that the %quality field in the wireless module outputs a leading space. For example, with this config line:

format_up = "W: (%quality at %essid) %ip"

The output looks like this:

W: ( 53% at TP-Link_A772_5G) 192.168.x.x

Notice the unwanted space right after the opening parenthesis before the number.

Is there a way to remove this leading space within i3status, or is this a known limitation? Ideally, %quality would be output without any leading/trailing spaces to allow precise formatting.

You can obtain the same result by adding format_quality = "%d%%" to your i3status config file without changing the code

I have a vague memory that is set intentionally as it is right now, both to allow output of 100%, and to avoid the % display causing the overall bar output to bounce around when it moved between 100% and lower values?

The output of 100% is still displayed correctly. You’re right about the potential “bouncing” effect when the value switches between 100% and 99%, but I think that’s more of an edge case. Also with an update interval of one second, i think it's not too distracting. Most of the time the signal quality is two digits, and when the laptop is stationary (which is the common scenario), the value tends to stay stable anyway.
