This would be easy to implement, just pick any currently-free register address and read it back at init. If you get the default value, then you need to push all default values regardless of the user choice. Write a 1 to this address after pushing values. Problem solved!
Would improve the case of the switching supply not starting up and the HV output appearing broken without any other diagnostics info.
