missing variable crash

If a requested variable is missing on archive, no notification is provided until diag.open() is run and an error returned stating "no files to open". some notification would be helpful, if the list of requested variables is long.

I completely agree. I think we should add a warning when the .resolve() step returns zero files for a variable.
