Running out of memory-

I'm consistently encountering an error about running out of memory, or getting the "heap memory" error. How can I allocate more Ram directly to this program? My laptop has 24gb availible, but the program is only using 2gb before grinding to a halt. The previous older topic says to refer to a wiki guide that no longer exists.
